Monday February, 16th 2010 brought a great excitement among the members of Kyembogo Farmers Association (KYEFA) as the group received a brand new tractor that was obtained by a special grant from USAID – LEAD (An American Development Agency that assists Developing countries). The Tractor was delivered with a disc plough. The use of this tractor will allow the farmers to cultivate/open many more acres of land and do so much faster. The tractor will rotate among the 2,000 members of the Association. This will allow the farmers to grow more and hence increase their productivity and home income.Yet, as with any advancement, there are new challenges to increasing the efficiency in the tractor's use. The grant covered the procurement of a tractor and disc plough. However, there is a need of a 9x9 inche disc hallow and a planter which cost $4,700 and $5,500 respectively. In addition, a trailer must be procured that will carry the plough around from farm to farm ($6,800). Finally, a tractor driver’s allowance is $200 per month. Having a driver is a must in order to maintain the instrument. This is a monumental moment for the organization and this tractor has the potential to dramatically increase the productivity and profitability of local farmers. KYEFA and UFI are going to continue to apply for grants in the hopes of receiving additional funding, but your contribution is greatly appreciated as well.
