A Brief History

Uganda Farmers Inc. is a 501(c)3 tax exempt, non-profit group of USA citizens in solidarity with Kyembogo Farmers Association, Uganda. This latter group is working to implement strategies that will enhance rural farmers' household income thus enabling them to educate their children and have access to primary medical care.

Foundation

In November of 2007 we citizens of Connecticut established Uganda Farmers, Inc. as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt, non-profit organization to assist rural poor famers in Uganda. Although we are open to other Ugandan groups wishing to apply for a grant, we are motivated to assist a Kyembogo Farmers Association because of our friendship with Rev. George Muganyizi, CSC, who is committed to the spiritual and social development of rural poor farmers in Kyembogo village of Kyarusozi Sub-County, Uganda where he serves.

OUR PURPOSE

Fund raising in genreal for rural farmers in Uganda. We have been approached with a particular interest by the superb organization of the Kyembogo Farmers Association (KYEFA) founded by Fr. George Muganyizi, CSC.

Kyembogo Farmers Association, now in its 10th year, was founded in 1998 by 15 local rural farmers coming together to try to improve their household income.

The farmers structured themselves in a collaborative, democratic association of men and women who carried out a needs evaluation in their village area. They developed by-laws and elected a board of directors and have a membership that now reaches 936 families.

KYEFA's original association gave rise to 36 other village associations. KYEFA is now a network of groups working towards their goals which include:

  • Modernizing farming methods in a eco-friendly way via education and practicums.

  • Developing micro-credit to grow small business.

  • Collecting dues to help buy and distribute farm tools as well as goats, chickens, and cows.

  • Caring for vulnerable widows and orphans.
