UFI Receives Special Visitor

UFI is happy to report that we received a visit from an African partner in our fight against poverty. Father Emmanuel Byaruhanga, currently of Fort Portal, Uganda has been visiting since June. He is staying at the St. Gabriel parish house in Milford, CT. Father Emmanuel is Rector of St. Mary’s, a minor seminary,. He is in charge of 250 students ranging in age from 13 to 25. This is his first visit to the US.
Father has been a great help in fostering the goals of UFI. He has spoken to civil groups, including the Kiwanis Club, the Devon Rotary, and the Milford Bar Association. UFI is currently raising funds to provide water for Father Emmanuel’s village of Rwesigiire. This village has never had electricity or running water. Residents must walk several miles to obtain water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and watering animals. This water project consists of drilling a borehole right in the center of the village. We are hoping that the hole will not be required to be too deep. If this is the case, water can be pumped manually. If, after the survey, it is found that the water is very deep, a generator will be needed. UFI is currently raising funds to get this project going. Our calculations indicate that a donation of $80 will provide water for one person for life. What a tremendous impact this will make on the lives of villagers. Children are the ones who are generally assigned the task of fetching water. This will free them to do other things like work on their school lessons, something that is often not done because when they arrive home from school, there are so many chores. Children must gather the firewood and the water. All cooking is done on an open fire. Often, by the time they finish their chores it is dark and they have lost the opportunity to study their school lessons. This project will have a tremendous effect on improving all aspects of village life.
We are currently organizing a 5K race and a golf tournament for the spring. We are seeking sponsors for both of these events.
